What is Personal Finance and Why is it Important? This very interactive session will help answer this question by exploring “savings”, “net worth” and the factors that influence individual economic choice. Participants will learn about Michigan State University Extension’s (MSUE) Financial Health Index Project and a best practice example of financial education, MSUE Macomb’s “Living on Less.”

Multifamily Development Case Studies Creating and Preserving Multi-family Housing

Hear from developers of affordable multifamily housing projects as they discuss the innovative means with which they developed housing in all regions of the state. Case studies will be highlighted detailing the funding sources utilized and the framework within those sources that made their projects a success.Case studies include:Park Place City Center, a 24 unit family development in Sault Ste. Marie that utilized Section 1602 funds, HOME funds, federal and state historic credits, and Brownfield credits; Ballentine Apartments, an 18 unit supportive housing development in Lansing that utilized project based supportive housing vouchers, 9% low income housing tax credits, and TCAP funds; and Harbor Bluffs, a 52 unit family development in Benton Harbor that utilized Section 1602 and HOPE VI funds.

Fair Housing Act Creating and Preserving Multi-family Housing

During this session we will cover fair housing basics and the requirements for the Affirmative Fair Housing Marketing Plan designed to promote equal housing choice for all prospective residents. Topics will include Fair Housing basics and HUD housing, reasonable accomodations and modifications, marketing and advertising, and limited English proficiency requirements.

New Federal Approaches to Combat Homelessness and Promote Affordable Housing Ending Homlessness

This session will review several important developments in federal legislation that impact affordable housing, homelessness and health care. Upcoming changes in the McKinney-Vento program following enactment of the HEARTH Act will be described, a review of the 2011 federal budget will be provided, and a discussion will be held on “hot topics” of the day. Speaker will emphasize an extended question & answer period to address the various interests in the room.

Energy Optimization Programs Help Weatherize Homes and
Save Money Homeownership

This session will present the largest weatherization network / utility projects to emerge to date.
Participants will learn about a successful partnership between the Michigan Community Action Agency Association (MCAAA), and CLEAResult Consulting, and how they competitively bid and won contract awards from the utility companies and state government to manage large utility Weatherization programs.
MCAAA was awarded the prime contract position as the State Energy Optimization Administrator, a position from which MCAAA works with CLEAResult to manage the implementation of a wide range of efficiency programs including weatherization, residential and commercial sector efficiency programs and new construction efficiency programs running through 2011.

At the beginning of the continuum of asset building for individuals and families is ensuring that they receive all the work-supports and benefits for which they are entitled like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Food Stamps, Medicais, SCHIP, etc. Unfortunately, for many working families, the traditional way of accessing these supports is both time consuming and complicated which is why Michigan is moving towards an online system that coordinates the application process across programs and harnesses the power of the Internet to help working families access the basic cuilding blocks of financial security.

National Homeless Death Prevention Study: Implications for Housing Policy Ending Homlessness

Detroit is one of 15 cities participating in a National Homeless Death Prevention Study. The study focuses on housing persons who are homeless and in greatest need, beginning with those who are most vulnerable to premature death on the street. The session will include a discussion on the vulnerability index, mortality of homeless individuals, and research implications ofsurvey results for local, state, and national housing policy.

An organization begins to build public support for its project as soon as they begin talking about it. While information is being gathered from other agencies, approaching possible partners and meeting with potential funders, you’re already teaching others about the value of the
project. These, however, are relatively easy audiences. It could be much tougher to build support for your project from its new neighbors. Learn how to prepare yourself for the potential challenges and hear successful strategies used by one supportive housing developer to address neighborhood concerns.

Acquisition and Rehab of Foreclosed Properties Homeownership

Typically, foreclosed homes become an enormous loss to a community. The houses are rarely maintained, can bring down surrounding property values, and can turn into sources of blight. Innovative community development programs from Detroit to Grand Rapids, and in mid-Michigan cities between, are gaining traction. Hear about acquisition and rehab programs in Detroit from Antoinette Gray of Central Detroit Christian CDC who has been partnering with Detroit LISC to acquire foreclosed properties in the Boston Edison neighborhood to rehab. Darrel Ross of Lighthouse CDC of Grand Rapids has been partnering with local government to acquire and rehab properties using the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. And Tom Caldwell of Great Lakes Capital Fund has been working with local partners to utilize Fannie Mae’s First Look program to deal with foreclosed properties in Battle Creek and other mid-Michigan cities. Each speaker and program brings a uniqu approach to this concept of turning a foreclosed property into a community asset.
